I’m excited to share some highlights from a James Island family session! When people plan a family portrait session, popular locations are Downtown Charleston and the beach. However, there are plenty of quaint and unassuming spots for photos in Charleston. From a photography standpoint, I want a locale with great light and non-distracting backgrounds. In this case, a tucked away park at the end of a residential street is all that we needed for this James Island family session.
I encourage families with children under 5 to keep photos close to home or where they’re vacationing. Younger children don’t always do well with long car rides. The shorter the overall process, usually the better experience the child (and whole family) has during portraits. A place with child activities like a playground or the beach also offer the opportunity for playful candids. With the Reynolds, there was a small playground within the park. We especially used the swings to have the parents push the kids. And even big brother helped push baby brother for a few photos.
It’s a lot to ask a younger child to stay still. This is why I like incorporating action into family photos. That can be playing on the swings. Walking and swinging little one in the air. A tickle contest. There are so many ways to make family photos relaxed and fun. When families embrace a non-traditional approach, the results are often great! I always mix in a few posed pics. But the children’s temperament determines how often we stop for posed photos.
The Reynolds’ family photos reflect a great mix of play and cozy posed portraits. I had a blast spending time with the Reynolds and capturing their family photos in the perfect little park on James Island!
